Tips to Prevent Acne Breakout this Summer

Tips to Prevent Acne Breakout this Summer
Most people are looking forward to summer as this is the season they can bask in the sun while enjoying lazy beach days and festivals. However, between the hot, humid weather and all those sweat-inducing outdoor activities and pool chemicals, acne tends to flare up during the summer months.

Heat and humidity intensify oil production, which leads to having clogged pores. When the hair follicles or the skin pores become clogged with oil, acne is formed.

To help you avoid missing out on summer fun for the sake of a clear complexion, we gathered up some tips to prevent acne breakout this summer:

Avoid heavy makeup

Because you tend to sweat more in the warmer months, use makeup and cosmetics sparingly. Applying heavy makeup especially foundations often lead to acne breakouts as these products tend to clog your skin pores and irritate your skin. If need be, make it as minimal as you could and always opt for light and organic products. Make sure you remove them and wash your face before going to bed as well.

Make use of a good toner

During the summer, your pores get clogged by dead skin cells that were dried by the sun. To allow your new skin to reproduce faster, choose a good toner and use it in the morning and every night.

Don’t over-exfoliate

During the summer months, over-exfoliating strips everything from your pores including its important natural oils, which can lead to excess drying, irritation and breakouts. If you’re toning on a regular basis, exfoliating isn’t really necessary.

Use blotting paper

Using your fingers to rub away excess oil only adds unwanted bacteria to your skin. Rather than using bathroom paper towels or your hands to wipe your extra shiny and greasy skin, consider using oil-blotting sheets.

Try a salicylic acid cleanser

Using a salicylic acid fights acne by dissolving the glue that holds dead skin cells together in the clogged pores. Salicylic acid can also be found in aspirin which means that it can have a calming effect by reducing your acne’s inflammation. Moreover, a good salicylic acid peel helps tighten pores and just refresh the skin in a way that gives you an instant glow.

Deep clean

You tend to sweat a lot when you are out in the hot sun. Whilst sweating keeps your skin cleansed naturally, it needs to be wiped off at regular intervals in order to prevent acne breakouts as sweat contains toxins and impurities. Make it a habit to always wash your face and take a shower after a long hot day.

Avoid stress

Stress has been proven to trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. Try and reduce stress. Stress management helps with the neutralisation of the acid that’s created when you have stress. Yoga and exercise improve your skin and boost metabolism or even taking a walk outside could actually help.

Follow a healthy diet

Most of us tend to increase the intake of sugary drinks, alcoholic beverages, and snack foods during the summer months. Instead of snacking on artificially sweetened foods like doughnuts, why not opt for fruits that are in season to get your fair intake of sweets. Veggies are also vital sources of antioxidants, vitamins and other essential nutrients that not only erase the signs of acne and heal acne-ridden skin but also work wonders for your overall health.

Drink plenty of water

Using harsh products or not moisturising enough can send oil glands into overdrive increasing shine and potential breakouts. When your skin is overproducing oil, then this means that it is dehydrated. Water flushes out toxins and other impurities from your system and keeps your skin cleansed and hydrated.
